HELP GET MASKS TO THE ONES THAT NEED THEM MOST
Already in Michigan, our friends and neighbors who work for the state?s health care system have reported that because of shortages they are reusing masks. This places them, their families, and ultimately their patients at an unacceptable risk of COVID-19 infection. We can?t sit around and wait for a political solution, we can and must act now to protect our Michigan heroes.
FROM THE FRONT LINES
Kristin Sandoval Maxson
RN Health Unit Manager
“The Michigan Department of Corrections has limited PPE. The places with positive cases are seeing numbers rapidly increase. We are already short staffed and re-using masks just as the hospitals are. Unfortunately, the spread of this virus within the correctional setting will be disastrous. Social distancing is not feasible in this environment. Many facilities are pole barn style- several men sleeping in bunks that are end to end. Other facilities have open bars on the cells.
We have limited cells that are single man with the ability to shut the door. The MDOC is doing what it can – visits are stopped, school groups are smaller and chow hall lines are spread out etc. My peers and I feel we will be last on the list to receive supplies because of the population we serve. We need to protect our staff- the Officers, Nurses and Support Staff. It is our duty to maintain safety and security within these institutions, so that the community is not at risk. I sincerely appreciate your efforts and dedication to this project. You are an inspiration!”
